World Humanitarian Day
  1. August 19 is known as World Humanitarian Day across the world.
  2. UN General Assembly decided to designate this day to pay the tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian services.
  3. August 19 is the date on which a brutal terrorist attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 took place. 22 people were killed, including UN representative Sergio Vieira de Mello.
  4. World Humanitarian Day was officially established to acknowledge Sergio and people like him who work every day to make the world a better place to live.
  5. The main purpose of this day is to work for those people who are less fortunate, deprived and those who live in places of war, facing starvation and pestilence.
  6. Humanitarian aid workers aim to provide life-saving assistance and long term rehabilitation to disaster-affected communities, regardless of where they are from and without any discrimination based on their nationality, religion, sex, race or any other factor.
  7. It provides opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.
  8. The Day also seeks to draw attention to humanitarian needs worldwide.
  9. This day spreads awareness and educates the people.
  10. This day is dedicated to heroes who put their lives in danger to help the ones in need.
