How Many Types of Sentences in English?
There are 4 types of sentences in English.
- Declarative
- Interrogative
- Imperative
- Exclamatory
Definition of Declarative sentences with examples
Declarative sentences are simple sentences and convey basic statements.
Examples of Declarative sentences:-
- My father’s name is Mr. John.
- I obey my parents.
- He loves ice cream.
- I go to school every day.
- We took a ride on a bus.
Types of Declarative Sentences:-
a) Compound declarative sentence
Examples: –
- I want to swim, so I am taking lessons for swimming class.
- We are going to Shimla so we are booking hotels in advance.
- I love home-cooked food but don’t know how to cook.
- Mohan doesn’t know how to play football, so he is taking lessons for learning football.
- He wants to visit the zoo in Delhi, so he is searching the internet for the rate of tickets.
b) Complex declarative sentences: –
- I ordered a Pizza when I went to Dominoes.
- I love my job as it gives me job satisfaction.
Compound complex sentences: –
a). Although the service at the Oberoi restaurant was not good, but the food was tasty and the rates were reasonable.
b). I don’t like parties full of noise but I like being with my friends and family.
c). It was too hot in the daytime. So I took a cab to reach my office.
Examples of compound interrogative sentences:-
Examples of compound interrogative sentences
- What is your name and where do you live?
- Do you know the route of Sarojini Nagar Market and which metro go there?
- How much does this shirt cost and why do you want it?
- Where do you live and what is the nearby landmark?
- Why did you come here and who invited you?
Examples of positive and negative declarative sentences:-
- Do you like tea?
Negative – don’t you like tea? - What do you like?
Negative – why didn’t you like it?
B. I don’t like parties full of noise but I like being with my friends and family.
C. I was too hot in the daytime. So I took a cab to reach my office.
c). Exclamatory sentences:-
These sentences express strong emotions like joy, fear, loss, happiness, surprise, etc. They
provide information but they finish on an exclamation point.
Examples of Exclamatory sentences: –
- How well he plays football!
- Hurray, we won the match!
- What an exciting visit to the zoo!
- How exciting the match was!
- What a brave person he is!
- “Happy marriage anniversary, my dear”!
- “How beautiful the waterfalls are!”
- “What a terrible movie!”
- “What beautiful scenery!”
d). Imperative sentences: –
They can be in form of advice, instruction, and forceful commands.
- Don’t bang the door.
- Shut the door properly.
- Pick up the flower.
- Stop abusing me!
- Concentrate on your study.
Interrogative sentences( Question?):-
Interrogative sentences ask a question. They end with a question mark.
The word order for the interrogative is: – (What, which) auxiliary + subject + verb
Examples: –
- Whose book is this?
- Why did you go there?
- What is your name?
- Where do you live?
