These are the 13 basic steps that we should follow for withdrawing/taking Venous blood samples for Lab investigations( 168 words).
How to do venous blood sample collection?
1. Reassure the patient about what is to be done.
2. Inspect the vein, use a tourniquet if needed.
3. Use a syringe of a size according to the amount of the blood required.
4. The selected position is sterilized with spirit.
5. It is allowed to dry.
6. Patient is asked to stretch the arm.
7. Tourniquet is tighten above the elbow & patient is asked to close the fist very tightly. It will make the vein prominent.
8. Take aseptic precautions and puncture the vein.
9. Having withdrawn blood, loosen the tourniquet & ask the patient to open his fist.
10. Let the patient apply a sterilized cotton swab with gentle pressure over the area.
11. Destroy the needle in needle shredder & discard sharp needle waste in puncture proof white bag. Cut the syringe & discard in red bag.
12. Transfer blood from syringe in appropriate tube gently. (Not through the needle)
13. Instruct the patient to throw the used cotton swabs in yellow bag.
