What is lockdown?

Lockdown is a state of isolation in consideration with the safety and security of people.

Lockdown is a need for people to stay where they are, due to specific risks they could cause to themselves or to others if they move freely. In simple words, we can say โ€œstay at homeโ€.

A lockdown can also be used to protect people.

A full lockdown means that people must stay where they are and may not enter or exit a building or rooms within it.

Covid 19 – lockdown in India

India  faced lockdown when the number of confirmed positive coronavirus cases were approximately 500.

On 24th March 2020, the government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s order, announced a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, as a preventive measure against the Covid-19 pandemic in India.

The Covid-19 pandemic in India is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 which originated from China caused by severe acute respiration syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The first case of Covid-19 in India was reported on 30 January 2020.

Important dates of lockdown

22nd March 2020 – 14 hours voluntary public curfew

PM Modi announced Janta curfew from 7a.m. to 9p.m. as a step to prevent coronavirus. Roads and streets were deserted as soon as the curfew came under effect.

24th March 2020

 The prime minister ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, affecting the entire 1.3 billion population of India.

15th April 2020 to 3rd May 2020

 The PM extended the nationwide lockdown for two weeks starting from 15th April to 3rd May 2020 .

4th May 2020 to 17th May 2020

The PM  again extended the nationwide lockdown for two weeks starting from 4th May 2020 to 17th May 2020.

18th May 2020 to 31st May 2020

Once   again  the period of  nationwide lockdown extended for two weeks starting from 18th May 2020 to 31st May 2020.

1st  June 2020

 The government started unlocking the country.

Again starting of Lockdown:- In second week of April 2021

April 21, 2021:- Second wave of COVID-19 again infected millions of people of India. As per available data on April 21, 2021, more than 2000 people lost their lives in a single day across India. Approximately 3,00,000 people are got infections in a single day.

India is struggling against the second wave that sparked shortages of hospital beds, oxygen, and medicines. In Delhi, the weekend lockdown started on April 17 2021 Saturday to April 18, 2021. The one-week lockdown has been imposed on the national capital to curb the COVID-19 Virus till the morning of April 26, 2021, as the number of COVID-19 infections has risen by approximately 600% in the last two weeks.

NEED OF LOCKDOWN-

Lockdown was imposed in India to prevent the spread of infection (Covid-19) from one person to another, to protect ourselves and others.

IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN-

Thousands of people migrated in and out of major Indian cities, as they became jobless after the lockdown due to shutdown of factories and workplaces.

Millions of migrant workers had to deal with the loss of income, food shortage and uncertainty about their future.

Around 14 crore Indians lost employment during the lockdown.

More than 45% households across the nation reported an income drop as compared to the previous year.

India’s growth in the fiscal year 2020 went down to 3.1%. The Indian economy was expected to lose over rupees 32000 crore every day. During the first 20 days of complete lockdown.
