Once there was a woodcutter who was very poor. He used to go forest for cutting trees and earn his livelihood by selling wood in the market.

One day when he was cutting wood near the bank of a river, his axe fell into the water. He tried to fish out his axe but the river was very deep and he could not locate it.

He was at a loss to know what to do. He was very worried that how would he cut the trees and earn his livelihood. He just sat near the bank of the river and started crying.

Suddenly the goddess of water appeared before him and asked him why he was crying. The woodcutter told him the whole story.

The goddess consoled him and assured him that she would bring back his axe. She disappeared into the water and soon returned with a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to accept it saying that it was not his axe.

The Goddess again dipped into the water and this time returned with a silver axe. The woodcutter again refused to take it, because it also did not belong to him.

Goddess again dipped into the water and this time she brought an iron axe. It was his own axe.

The woodcutter was very happy to see it. He thanked Goddess for helping him and took his iron axe. Goddess was very happy with his honesty and she rewarded him with the other two axes as well.

एक बार एक लकड़हारा था जो बहुत गरीब था। वह पेड़ों को काटने के लिए जंगल जाता था और बाजार में लकड़ी बेचकर पैसा कमाता था। एक दिन जब वह एक नदी के किनारे लकड़ी काट रहा था, उसकी कुल्हाड़ी पानी में गिर गई। उसने अपनी कुल्हाड़ी निकालने की कोशिश की लेकिन नदी बहुत गहरी थी और वह उसका पता नहीं लगा सका। उसे समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि उसे क्या करना है। वह बहुत चिंतित था कि वह पेड़ों को कैसे काटेगा और अपनी आजीविका कैसे कमाएगा। वह बस नदी के किनारे बैठ गया और रोने लगा।
अचानक पानी की देवी उनके सामने प्रकट हुईं और उनसे पूछा कि वह क्यों रो रहे हैं। लकड़हारे ने उसे सारी कहानी सुनाई। देवी ने उसे सांत्वना दी और आश्वासन दिया कि वह उसकी कुल्हाड़ी वापस ले आएगी। वह पानी में गायब हो गई और जल्द ही एक सोने की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर लौट आई। लकड़हारे ने यह कहते हुए इसे स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर दिया कि यह उसकी कुल्हाड़ी नहीं है। देवी ने फिर से पानी में डुबकी लगाई और इस बार चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर लौटीं। लकड़हारे ने फिर उसे लेने से मना कर दिया, क्योंकि वह भी उसका नहीं था। देवी ने फिर से पानी में डुबकी लगाई और इस बार वह एक लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर आई। यह उसकी अपनी कुल्हाड़ी थी। लकड़हारा यह देखकर बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने मदद करने के लिए देवी को धन्यवाद दिया और अपनी लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी ले ली। देवी उसकी ईमानदारी से बहुत खुश हुई और उसने उसे अन्य दो कुल्हाड़ियों से भी पुरस्कृत किया।
