At present, there are two types of tests are available for testing SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19.
1 Rapid Antigen Test :
This test recognizes protein fragments that are specific to the Coronavirus. Antigen tests are immunoassays that detects the presence of specific viral antigen. Rapid Antigen Test identify the people who currently have a viral infection.
Results of Rapid Antigen tests can be reported very quick that is within 15 minutes.
2. RT-PCR :- real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction
RT-PCR is the ‘gold standard frontline test’ to detect COVID-19. After showing unsatisfactory and unreliable results by rapid antigen test , It came into effect .
This test detects RNA(ribonucleic acid) or genetic material that is specific to the virus. In this method a nasal and throat swab is taken from the patient.
The RT-PCR technology for detecting SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 is an expensive method.
What needed to do RT-PCR test ?
- RNA extracting machine
- A laboratory
- Trained technicians for collection and performing test
Tests are done in batches. It takes minimum four hours are to detect the virus from one batch.
What is an anti-body test?
Anti body tests are also known as serological tests. In this method, antibodies are detected that are produced by immune system.
