Question 1. Why could Gandhiji not accompany Shukla immediately to Champaran? List the places that he visited between the meeting with Shukla and his arrival at Champaran.

Answer. Gandhiji couldn’t accompany Shukla to Champaran immediately due to certain prior engagements. He was expected in Cawnpore and he had to visit many parts of India after which he returned to his ashram near Ahemdabad. It was only after his visit to Calcutta, Patna and Muzzafarpur that he was able to make it to Champaran.

Question 2. How did the Champaran episode change the plight of the peasants?

Answer. The Champaran episode released the peasants from the mortal fear of british landlords and made them aware of their rights. Apart from getting back 25% of the compensation money, they also learnt ‘courage’. The episode thus marked the beginning of cultural, social, and economic transformation of the poor and exploited peasants of Champaran. Within a few years, the british planters abandoned their estates, which reverted to the peasants.

Question 3. Why did Gandhiji visit Muzzafarpur on his way to Champaran? Who received him there?

Answer. Shukla had given a fairly detailed account of injustice meted out to the indigo sharecroppers of Champaran by the british landlords. However, Gandhiji wished to gather more complete information from Muzzafarpur. There he was received at the station by J.B. Kriplani, a professor of the Arts college who had come along with a large body of students.

Question 4. Why did Gandhiji call on the British official commissioner of the Tirhut division? What was the outcome of this meeting?

Answer. The un-cooperative attitude of the secretary of the british landlord’s association prompted Gandhiji to contact the official commissioner of the Tirhut division. This meeting, like the meeting with the association secretarytoo was of no avail as the authoritative commissioner tried to bully Gandhiji and advised him to leave Tirhut.

Question 5. Why did Gandhiji stay on in Champaran even after the sharecropper’s problem was solved?

Answer. Having won the peasant’s battle against their English landlords, Gandhiji got busy with the cultural and social upliftment of the poor and backward villages of Champaran. There was a lot to be done to fight illiteracy, insanitation and ill-health. Therefore, Gandhiji stayed on in Champaran even after the sharecroppers’ problem was solved. He even sought the help of the volunteers from his ashram and elsewhere.
