Story of Ahoi Ashtami
Once upon a time, a moneylender who had seven sons lived in a village. One day his wife just some days before Diwali, for repairing and decorating her house during the Diwali festival went to the forest to bring some soil. It was the month of Kartik. When she was digging deep to fetch the soil, she unknowingly killed the cub of a lion with the spade. It was just an accident as she didn’t know that the cub was sleeping there. The animal felt sad to see their cub & cursed her to suffer the same pain as they were suffering. After this incident, within a year all her 7 children died.
The couple was feeling intolerable pain & decided to kill themselves while going on a final pilgrimage for freeing themselves from pain and grief due to the death of all their seven sons.
They kept walking till they were no longer able to and fell unconscious on the ground. Then god, on seeing their grief and pitiful condition, made an akashvani that they should serve the holy cow and worship goddess Ahoi Mata is believed to be the protector of the offspring of all living beings.
After listening to this message of God, they felt relieved. They just followed the instructions given by the supreme power of God. When the day of Ashtami came, the wife observed the whole day fast & worshipped Ahoi Mata. She also drew the face of a young lion. She honesty accepted her sin that she had committed unknowingly and repented for the same.
Goddess Ahoi was pleased with her devotion, honesty, and dedication and appeared before her and gave her the boon of fertility.
It is a famous Hindu festival that is celebrated about 8 days before Diwali on Krishna paksha Ashtami. It is generally observed for the long lives of sons by mothers. This day is also known as Ahoi Aathe. Ahoi Mata is goddess Parvati.
