India is a country of various cultures, traditions and festivals. Lohri festival is one of the major festivals of India. It is celebrated by Sikhs, Punjabis and Hindus with great pomp and show. It is celebrated one day before Makar Sakranti. Lohri is also known as Lal Loi. It is a midwinter festival and celebration of winter solstice.

  1. Lohri is a famous Punjabi festival celebrated in India with great joy and enthusiasm mostly by Punjabi’s, Sikhs and Hindus on 13th January.
  2. It is not only celebrated in India but also outside of India, Sikh, Punjabi and Hindu communities come together to celebrate Lohri festival.
  3. On the occasion of the Lohri festival, people mainly from North India including the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Uttar Pardesh lit the bonfire, sing folk songs, dance together and pray for good health and prosperity to all.
  4. This festival is also known as the harvest festival and marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of the spring season.

  9. Dry wood and cow dung is used to prepare bonfire. In north india, there is a private Lohri celebration with Lohri rituals along with special Lohri songs.
