Tuberculosis is a known term for everyone. It is a contagious infection. Tuberculosis is also known as T.B. It is caused by the bacteria called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.

  1. Tuberculosis is a communicable disease. It generally attacks the lungs. But your other body parts like the brain and the spine also may be infected due to tuberculosis. It can also affect other parts of the body.
  2. It is caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis bacteria and is an infectious disease.
  3. There are two types of tuberculosis – (1) latent Tuberculosis :– this type of infection of tuberculosis does not show any symptoms. (2) Active Tuberculosis: – this type of tuberculosis shows symptoms as germs multiply and also spread the disease.
  4. The symptoms of active tuberculosis are a chronic cough, blood-containing sputum, fever, weight loss and night sweats.
  5. People infected with latent TB do not spread the disease. People with active TB in lungs spread the infection through the air when they cough, spit and sneeze.
  6. Active tuberculosis is diagnosed with the help of chest x-rays, microscopic examination and culture of body fluids. Diagnosis of latent TB is based on the tuberculosis skin test (TST) or blood tests.
  7. The vaccine for tuberculosis is Bacillus Calmette Guerion (BCG).
  8. Antibiotics are the treatment to kill bacteria. The duration of treatment is 6 to 9 months.
  9. World TB day is observed every year on 24th March to make people aware of about this communicable disease, its causes, prevention and treatment.
  10. It is a global health awareness program.
